What does it mean to be an immigrant today? Has the immigrant experience changed since the last century?

Immigration Nation The American Identity in the Twenty-First Century invites middle and high schoolers to explore the history of immigration in the United States, along with immigration law and statistics through the perspectives of immigrants, citizens, policy makers, and border agents.

For more than a century, an immigrant from France has stood vigil in the New York Harbor. At 350 feet tall, with a majestic spiked crown upon her head, a tablet of laws clutched in one hand and a torch held aloft in the other, the lady is hard to miss. She cries out to the world, “Give me your tired, your poor…I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” Millions of immigrants have answered the Statue of Liberty’s call, passing over, under, or through the Golden Door to become Americans.

However, on the eve of its 250th birthday, the United States is in the middle of an identity crisis. Should this land of immigrants open the door open to outsiders, people hungry for opportunity and desperate for freedom? Or should the country shut the golden door, barring entry to all but a select few? And what does it mean to be an American? How citizens answer these questions in the early twenty-first century will determine the future of America’s identity.

Immigration Nation includes critical-thinking activities and research exercises to encourage readers to dive deep into the topic and consider viewpoints from many different identities. Interesting facts, links to online primary sources and other supplemental material, and essential questions take readers on an exploration of the past, present, and future of immigration.

Immigration Nation is part of a set of four books called Inquire & Investigate Social Issues of the Twenty-First Century, which explores the social challenges that have faced our world in the past and that continue to drive us to do better in the future. Other titles in this set are Gender Identity, Feminism, and Race Relations.

Nomad Press books integrate content with participation, encouraging readers to engage in student-directed learning as opposed to teacher-guided instruction. This student-centered approach provides readers with the tools they need to become inquiry-based learners. Common Core State Standards and National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies all place project-based learning as key building blocks in education. Combining content with inquiry-based projects stimulates learning and makes it active and alive. As informational texts, our books provide key ideas and details from which readers can make their own inferences. Nomad’s unique approach simultaneously grounds kids in factual knowledge while allowing them the space to be curious, creative, and critical thinkers.

The Pagan Heart of the West challenges current academic notions that paganism died when Christianization occurred; that the transition from paganism to Christianity was a fairly easy, nonviolent one; that persons once pagan were happy to accept the new religion because it fulfilled them or because they viewed it as superior – as if the Inquisition never happened; and that all things pagan are in fact Christian prior to the mid-twentieth century, even though they demonstrate little or no connection to the Christian New Testament. Likewise, Pagan Heart challenges narrow conceptions of “the West.”
Applying Indigenous and decolonial theories, together with Michel Foucault’s conception of subjugated knowledges, Pagan Heart suggests that instead, paganism should be explored as an ancient and indigenous set of common beliefs and practices, at once ubiquitous and local, that includes the reverence of deities; the veneration of nature; rites celebrating the seasons and the life cycle; practices of healing, divination, and magic, often guided by ritual specialists; and arts and philosophies giving expression to pagan figures, concepts, and narratives.
In this second, Pagan Heart focuses on the veneration of nature -- flora, fauna, elements, celestial bodies -- and on rituals of the seasons, life cycle, healing, divination, and magic. Like the other volumes, this volume demonstrates that paganism has not only persisted over the course of millennia, but that it has also undergone metamorphosis and innovation.
Most importantly, Pagan Heart emphasizes that the ancient gods did not die when Christian authorities forbade their worship and sought, in N. Scott Momaday’s terms, to commit deicide, but instead that they continue to exist and thrive.

Caleb secretly wonders what his life would be like if his two parents were still together. He must learn to fight his way past the thoughts of living in two separate homes. In his quest to understand why he has a divided home, he eventually understands why.

Today many people are living in divorced and single-parent home settings. Caleb is a boy who feels confused and trapped between two different family settings. Driven to find out the truth about his parents' split, the listener learns why this suburban North Carolina boy is frustrated. Is it wrong for Caleb to try to understand his family dynamic? Or should he remain silent?

In a world where blended families are the new norm, take a look at Caleb's journey to understand his family environment. Patrice Shavone Brown, being a controversial author, explores why the topic of blended family homes is important.

Read We Blend Well Together One Boy Learns to Understand the Importance of His Extended Blended Family Audible Audio Edition Patrice Brown Patrice Shavone Brown My Story Publishing Books

"We blend well together is a wonderful book written by Patrice Shavone Brown for blended families. This book concentrates on the positives aspects of having blended family. It gives hope and understanding to parents and children of all ages. Reading this book will help everyone keep an open mind and help the family ease into their new life-changing situation. Every blended family or soon to be blended family should read this book either as a guide or at least for encouragement.

This story is through the eyes of a 9 years old sweet little boy named Caleb Brown. Things did not work out between Caleb’s mother and father so they divorced and went their separate ways. The father remarried and had another child with his new wife. Caleb and his sister did not want their mother to be alone. The children live at home with the mother and go to the father’s home on the weekends.

The process of being in a blended family is so uncertain, that children tend to get angry or scared about the new changes in their life. Children are very inquisitive and have lots of questions just like Caleb did in the story. They tend to feel unloved, neglected and want to know what happened to make their parents fall out of love. Happiness has to be in a relationship in order for it to work and sometimes that might mean starting new separate lives. Children become confused and resentful when both parents are not together.

As you read the story, you will notice that Caleb only dwells on the challenging experiences of being in a blended family. His mother, on the other hand, points out the rewarding experiences that he did not notice about being a part of a big family.

The author does a great job linking the relationship between the text and the images. The illustration in this book really grabs the attention of all readers with very detailed and colorful pictures. The images alone tell the story as it captures all of the important things that occurred in Caleb’s life. It shows his “big family” there for him every step of the way. After the talk with mom, Caleb feels so much better about their situation. He finally realizes that he doesn’t just have two parents that love him. He have four parents and a lot of siblings that love and support him with his endeavors.

By the end of the book, readers will begin to relate to Caleb. They will understand that they too have double the love and support from their blended family. The book focuses on allowing families, blended or soon to be blended, to understand and comprehend exactly what the book is about and feel what the character is going through. This can be very helpful for everyone experiencing this transition.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it is simple enough for all readers to understand. It takes the negative thoughts that children might feel and focus on the positives of being in a blended family. The book is 34 colorful pages depicting the presence of a strong family bond. I recommend purchasing this book to every blended or soon to be blended family. It is time to do like Caleb and embrace your big family and blend well together. Enjoy!"

  • My high school pal and I sneaked off one Friday night to see “Blazing Saddles.” We were 17, which made us ‘legal’ to get into an R-rated film. It still felt like an act of rebellion. Our parents wouldn’t have approved. The campfire scene alone was worth the ticket, but there was so much more.

There’s so much more to Mel Brooks, too, and “Funny Man” is a serious biography about a seriously funny man. Behind the talk-show antics and the big-screen parodies is a self-made entertainer who worked hard to achieve and maintain his standing as one of the most reliable laugh-makers around. If dying is hard and comedy is harder – well, the business of comedy is harder still, if Mel’s career is any example.

Fueling Mel’s rise from teenage Brooklyn wiseacre to national clown is an out-size ego. The talent hasn’t always been strong enough to support the ego. His career has had plenty of failures amid the enormous hits. But those hits – “Get Smart” in TV, “The 2,000-Year-Old Man” in recordings, “The Producers” on Broadway and a string of movies _ are pretty darn solid.

Comedy isn’t all fun and games, and neither is Mel. He covets credit and at times seems to want more than his fair share. He covets the money that laughter generates and at times seems to want more than his fair share. His first shot at being a husband was a misfire and he wasn’t the best ex-husband either. Tread carefully Mel is as well-armed with lawyers as he is with humor.

(Mel does have an eye for and an appreciation of talent. For example, when no one else would take a chance on young David Lynch, Mel did. Lynch had the freedom to make “The Elephant Man” his way because Mel backed him up.)

All this and more make Mel Brooks a real person, not just the character he’s created for our amusement. And author Patrick McGilligan makes “Funny Man” a fascinating read – a well-sourced, painstakingly researched tale of a success that has had plenty of high notes and more than a few sour ones. But I’ll take those laughs any day.
  • This is a highly uncharitable view of Mel Brooks's life and works. It's far too long because the author doesn't choose to tell us what we need to know, but rather everything that he knows. I got the feeling that every electronic file and index card that was created made its way into the book. Do we really need to know that an assistant cameraman on a film became the sound guy five years later on another one? It's almost that tedious.

The eye-opener for me was the ongoing depiction of Brooks as selfish, abrupt, parsimonious, and egocentric to an extreme. For his entire career as a writer he never wrote—he was called a "talking writer" and someone else had to write down the outpourings. According to the author's research, Brooks is also highly litigious. The author mentions several times that, of all his books, more people refused to be interviewed for this one, citing Brooks's massive temper and readiness to sue. And Brooks is well into his 90s!

The background of the various movies and plays is interesting, especially the casting and fights over various credits, as well as Brooks's cleverness in building his own fortune through overseas rights. His treatment of his first wife is nothing less than detestable. His love affair with and marriage to Anne Bancroft is delightful.

I've always considered Brooks funny and no less now. But I've also believed that all comedy, especially Jewish comedy, is rooted in pain, and this book demonstrates not only the truth in that belief but also the pain it can cause for innocent bystanders. The book would be far better at two-thirds the length, and Brooks, apparently, would have been far better with two-thirds more charity and generosity.
  • Yes writers are funny men and women, Brooks included, but the Brooks antics, his massive ego, his lack of character and his boorishness is nothing to celebrate.
  • I loved Mel Brooks' films and I hated reading this book. The author seems pretty much hell-bent on destroying Mel Brooks' legacy. I bought this book because I wanted to get the background on some of my favorite films of all time. Instead, the author drags us through tedious amounts of irrelevant historical detail to demonstrate the thoroughness of his research - and then just bashes the poor guy mercilessly. Let's face it. I don't expect anyone in Hollywood, much less Mel Brooks, to have been without his issues. I'm sure there were plenty of times when he was a self-obsessed moron. Who in Hollywood isn't (except perhaps Tom Hanks)? But the author seems to only want to accentuate Mel's bad sides with very little credit to the positive. I stopped reading about 350 pages in because it was just not balanced. What I hoped would be an enjoyable read was simply painful. If you liked Mel Brooks' stuff, don't waste your money here. It'll give you High Anxiety.
  • A superb biography. Meticulously researched, incisive & well written. Despite its length, the book is a mesmerizing & a quick read. There are informative discussions of all aspects of Brooks's career television, stand up, film & theater. Should remain the definitive biography for decades to come.
  • Very long book, and heavy
  • I loved this book. Author Patrick McGilligan tells a great story of Mel Brooks’s life and career. But the book is more than that; it is also a history of American comedic television. I’m a big Brooks fan and I couldn’t put the book down. But there is a darker side to Brooks that McGilligan also describes that is equally as fascinating as Brooks's comedic side. As a biography in general I think this book is well worth reading. But for anyone familiar with Brooks’s work, it is a must read.
Disclosure I received a complimentary copy of this book via Edelweiss for review purposes.
