"We blend well together is a wonderful book written by Patrice Shavone Brown for blended families. This book concentrates on the positives aspects of having blended family. It gives hope and understanding to parents and children of all ages. Reading this book will help everyone keep an open mind and help the family ease into their new life-changing situation. Every blended family or soon to be blended family should read this book either as a guide or at least for encouragement.

This story is through the eyes of a 9 years old sweet little boy named Caleb Brown. Things did not work out between Caleb’s mother and father so they divorced and went their separate ways. The father remarried and had another child with his new wife. Caleb and his sister did not want their mother to be alone. The children live at home with the mother and go to the father’s home on the weekends.

The process of being in a blended family is so uncertain, that children tend to get angry or scared about the new changes in their life. Children are very inquisitive and have lots of questions just like Caleb did in the story. They tend to feel unloved, neglected and want to know what happened to make their parents fall out of love. Happiness has to be in a relationship in order for it to work and sometimes that might mean starting new separate lives. Children become confused and resentful when both parents are not together.

As you read the story, you will notice that Caleb only dwells on the challenging experiences of being in a blended family. His mother, on the other hand, points out the rewarding experiences that he did not notice about being a part of a big family.

The author does a great job linking the relationship between the text and the images. The illustration in this book really grabs the attention of all readers with very detailed and colorful pictures. The images alone tell the story as it captures all of the important things that occurred in Caleb’s life. It shows his “big family” there for him every step of the way. After the talk with mom, Caleb feels so much better about their situation. He finally realizes that he doesn’t just have two parents that love him. He have four parents and a lot of siblings that love and support him with his endeavors.

By the end of the book, readers will begin to relate to Caleb. They will understand that they too have double the love and support from their blended family. The book focuses on allowing families, blended or soon to be blended, to understand and comprehend exactly what the book is about and feel what the character is going through. This can be very helpful for everyone experiencing this transition.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars because it is simple enough for all readers to understand. It takes the negative thoughts that children might feel and focus on the positives of being in a blended family. The book is 34 colorful pages depicting the presence of a strong family bond. I recommend purchasing this book to every blended or soon to be blended family. It is time to do like Caleb and embrace your big family and blend well together. Enjoy!"
