"This is a very odd book. If you notice the audible reviews, they're almost all written on the same day. The narrating is very strange - almost robotic - and the sentences often use incorrect words or phrasing that doesn't mean anything. Perhaps this was originally written in a different language and then google translated? For instance, she refers to an "amplifying glass" that you can use to start fires. Uh, do you mean magnifying glass?? I ended up listening to about an hour of it, and had to return it. Plus - content wise - this is really just reading you lists of things you need to bring camping. It also makes camping sound incredibly dangerous. It also says that you can get your water from streams and lakes (please don't drink that). Also the recommendations for beginning camping - don't put your site near any strange caves, make sure you're not in a flood plan - I mean, wouldn't beginning campers go to a campground??
All in all, a very strange book and not really worth your time."

- I've done my share of camping both with the BSA and on my own. At first, I hated it. Then, I got used to it. Now, I kind of miss it. I think the main reason I learned to enjoy camping is because I never stopped learning how to camp. Each time I did it, I learned something new--something that made the next time just a bit better and/or easier.
I had the Boy Scouts of America, and a bunch of well-seasoned BSA leaders, to show me the ropes. I learned the hard way, made a lot of mistakes, and eventually got pretty good at it.
Going through this book, I found myself shaking my head...a lot. Why? Because this book contains so many lessons, secrets, or whatever you want to call them, that I could have used to be a lot less miserable my first year of camping. Less wet, less tired, less injured...you name it.
The advice in this book is simple and easy to follow. It's not wrapped up in lengthy personal stories by the author where you have to read three pages to extract one jewel of knowledge. If you like that kind of thing, this book might be a little dry. For me, I'd rather have the author get to the point. I don't need a backstory to know what kind of snakes are venomous and which are not.
If you're thinking about trying out camping, and you don't have a BSA troop with which to affiliate yourself, this book should be a great help. - This is a very odd book.
