What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Nikki Tate is infamous, even by Las Vegas standards. Her dad is sitting on death row, convicted of killing his best friend in a gambling dispute turned ugly. And for five years, he's maintained his innocence. But Nikki wants no part of that. She's been working on Operation Escape Vegas playing in illegal card games so she can save up enough money to get out come graduation day.

Then her dad's murder conviction is overturned. The new evidence seems to come out of nowhere and Nikki's life becomes a mess when he's released from prison. Because the dad who comes home is not the dad she remembers. And he's desperately obsessed with finding out who framed him--and why.

As her dad digs into the seedy underbelly of Vegas, the past threatens everything and Nikki is drawn into his deadly hunt for the truth. But in the city of sin, some sinners will do anything to keep their secrets, and Nikki soon finds herself playing for the biggest gamble ever--her life.

Overturned Lamar Giles Books Reviews

  • Shortly after being released from death row cleared, Nikki Tate's father is murdered. The teenage poker expert is on a mission to find his killer, likely the same person who set him up for murder. Her journey takes her from her family own casino in Vegas through the underground and underworld, and a shot at love. If she can survive.

Nikki is one of the most bad-assed teen heroines found in YA lit. She's fearless, which isn't always to her benefit. Savvy, smart and determined Nikki is not above lying and deceiving to get answers.

Lamar Giles writes gave her a clever, often witty voice. His writing flows effortlessly with a steady, quick pace. I enjoyed the minor characters. OVERTURNED is filled with diversity from Nikki's best friend's two dads to multiple ethnicities and economic backgrounds, yet the spectrum of differences never felt forced, artificial or in your face.

Readers who enjoy mysteries, action, crime and realistic fiction will devour OVERTURNED.
  • Overturned had everything I love about great YA (this isn't MG...not sure why I saw reviews rating it as MG) it's easy to read, the story doesn't ramble (it grabs you and holds you for the entire journey), and there's a dream and a determination to see it through. One thing this book has that sets it apart from "good enough YA" is the fresh outlook and new problem set. It's not everyday you find YA that breaks the mold. By changing up the main characters motivations and personality and throwing in the card shark/vegas life, this book is quite original. It's a given that the dialogue is believable and the mystery has twists (cause I said it was great). I can't say I understood every single card playing scene (want to make some money invite me to play cards), but I understood enough to get the book. I really connected with Nikki and I'm happy to see there's a little romance here. I think adults and teens would love this book!
  • I loved this book. Of course wanting to find out "who did it" kept the pages turning, but it was SO MUCH MORE that kept me reading way, way too late into the night. The main character, Nikki Tate, is so relatable and real that she stuck with me for many days after I finished the book. Not only is it a whirlwind ride through the side of Las Vegas tourists will never see, but it's so fully developed that I felt like I was right there with Nikki everywhere from her high school to her casino to the illegal gambling rooms. I also loved that there was not only an adorable (though complicated!) romance, but also a real friendship story. The best friends weren't just mentioned and forgotten--they were real and grew through the story. I highly recommend this book!
  • Just started this a few days ago and can't stop! It's impossible to put down, and like Mr. Giles' other books it is superbly crafted from plot to language to character. Authentic and a great voice. Recommended.
  • This was an other great suspense novel from Lamar Giles. I enjoy his characters and the mature role that they take on. Very enjoyable reading for high schoolers.
  • Cannot imagine anyone not enjoying this book. The characters are all fascinating, the story in non-stop action, and the writing is superb. This is the first book by Lamar Giles that I have had the pleasure of reading but it will not be the last.
  • Overturned by Lamar Giles has a unique plot and sarcastic humor. The second line of the book is priceless, "He was my dad's latest and greatest attorney from the law firm of Cheap Suit, Bald Spot & Smoker's Cough." I immediately appreciated the author's use of humor. Nikki Tate is keeping her family's business running while her father is in prison. Nikki's mother tries to help but is not quite capable enough to handle the casino business on her own. Her father is released from prison and sees that Nikki is using her gambling knowledge and card skills to earn money for college and what she considers freedom. Nikki has a crush on Davis, the new student. Davis' family owns the new casino in Las Vegas that Nikki's father seems to be spending a lot of time at. He's also showing Nikki the ropes of high stakes gambling. Nikki and Davis' relationship is adorable and the dent they made in the hood of a borrowed car while kissing made me laugh out loud. Things take a turn for the worse when Nikki gets a crime scene thrust in front of her eyes. The mystery builds and then unravels. The author created complex and wonderful characters; I cared about them and enjoyed their personalities Nikki's maturity and intelligence, Molly's snark and loyalty and Gavin and his protectiveness. 5 stars for an interesting mystery that kept me entertained!
  • I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of this amazing novel at a workshop I attended this summer where Mr. Giles was faculty. He is a master wordsmith. This book is sharp, witty, moves incredibly fast--never letting a reader's mind wander, and contains just enough twists and turns to make the reader go back and re-read certain sections. It's set in Las Vegas and much of the plot revolves around poker. I've never been to Vegas or played a single hand of poker in my life, but it didn't matter. The beauty of the author's gift for crafting stories, is the way he can connect you with places and characters that you may never encounter in every day life. I found myself rooting for this MC, and I think you will too.
