"Very good book, explains chess very well, for any beginner this is a great book to understand chess and play with family and friends. I bought this to teach chess for my smaller kids but in that process I learned many terms and tips and tricks as well. - I teach chess to children from 4-11 years old. This is my go-to book for the younger players, that is early readers to maybe age 8 or 9. It is all a young learning player needs to dive into the beauty and fun of chess. Lots of color. Clearly written and illustrated.
It is also a good book for parents and grandparents to use as a guide if they have forgotten (or never knew) some of the rules and tactics.
Once one has mastered everything in this book, he or she can enjoy chess for a lifetime. Or if the young player wants to move on to scholastic tournaments, it will still have laid a good foundation for more advanced texts. - This is a great book to teach my eight and nine year old, and I am not going to lie, I'm learning too. We started reading it aloud it to each other about a week and a half ago, and my kids are already going off by themselves and playing chess with one another, and they downloaded a game to play in the car. We highly recommend Chess for Kids, big kids and little ones.

- At 72 y/o, I decided to try to learn chess again. The teachers were wonderful and all rather high-ranking competitors, but I found chess is essentially a passion and a compulsion. As a librarian with a master's degree, I've learned that when approaching a new subject it's very helpful to start at a very simple level to get the feel for the subject. When an event came up, I sent this, along with the portable chess set, to my 'brainy' young grandson. He'll probably catch on before I would, but I'm tempted to re-order this for myself and take another go at it!
- My 8yr old son studied this book the night he received it and was teaching his 5yr old brother how to play Chess the next morning! Highly recommended.
- Good book. Not great, but certainly good. Readable for kids. My grandsons enjoyed it, and it set them on a good path in chess club. They are 6. It may have a stronger impact on older children.
- Having never been introduced to Chess, this grandmother had little choice but to learn when the grandson became president of the Chess Club. I was looking for something that could walk me through the reasoning of the game as well as explain in easy to understand terminology. So, though I'm still practicing, this book was the answer to my latent learning of the game..
- I bought it to teach myself, and you can't go wrong with any DK books, I love them. Step-by-step, simple explanations, and great pictures. Can't go wrong with DK. They make nice gifts too.
