"The sub-heading on the cover reads: "10 Captivating Short Stories to Learn French...the Fun Way!"
How anyone could ever have come up with "captivating" and "fun" in connection with this slim volume is beyond me.

The 1st story is about 3 young people from 3 different French-speaking countries, meeting and talking about the differences in the way French is spoken in each of their countries. How truly "captivating" !

Furthermore, words that might be new and in need of being looked up are given, with their translations, in the so-named "vocabulary pages" at the END of each story instead of each page having a separate little section at the bottom, as for footnotes (and as is the case with all standard foreign-language readers), with the difficult words of each page and their translations right there, at the bottom of the page you are on, so that you just have to glance at the bottom to see the meaning.
But no. Here, you have to keep flipping back and forth from your place in the book to the vocabulary pages at the end of the very dull and unimaginative story you are attempting to slog through.

In the 2nd story an IT geek is very proud of all of his equipment and sets it up in a new office, but the printer doesn't work. So he calls in his friend and the friend's dog (Wow! Fun!) to help him.

I only suffered though 2 pages of the first story and 1 page of the 2nd. Then, out of a sense of self-preservation, I gave up. The book is now lying on the table in the front hall while I try to come up with an idea of what to do with it. It cost too much to put it in the bin with old newspapers, etc., waiting to be taken to the recycling area, but I cannot think of anyone I'd foist it on.

  • I'm finding this book to be a good continuation of the first book which is for "beginners." It's a lot tougher, with more advanced vocabulary and grammar. Like the first book, the vocabulary is accessible, by which I mean it's introduced in context, then repeated over and over. Grammar is it's own animal, so I'll tell you that I've been learning grammar with a high school level text, but then there's lot's of opportunities to practice throughout the text. It's a fun book to read and learn from, and you feel like you're improving because you understand the story - en francais!

I want to address the little bit of hate I've seen in another review. Btw, I don't know the authors, I'm not a shill, I just like learning languages. For me, a truly captivating story would be in an area I really like, such as history, or music history, etc. So if that's your interest, it's out there on the internet. A book like this is geared to people not quite ready for that level of reading, or perhaps just arriving at that level but still needing to boost vocabulary and understanding. It gives a broad spectrum of exposure to topics and vocabulary, and creates stories that are fun to read. Sure they're cheesy, but you're not ready for Ph.D. dissertation material in the early stages of the language learning process. So have fun with the stories, and take them for what they are! This book doesn't pretend to be the next great novel; it's teaching us a foreign language.

  • As a first time language learner, my approach might be different from those that are coming at this book from a polyglot/language buff perspective. What I like about this book is the stories are straightforward and cover a wide range of vocabulary. The sentences are more complex than a beginners, enough to offer me a challenge to stay concentrating, but not so much so that it's impossible to get through. It's a really good balance.

The audio book is read slow enough too, so that I can focus on vocabulary and concentrating on listening for a longer period of time.

I don't find the vocabulary lists as helpful, but I am used to looking up words on my own at this point so it might be helpful for others who want the convienence. I like that they are kept at the end, as I don't want English to clutter up the French and break my focus. The questions at the end of the chapter are also extra for me. I'm using it really for the stories.
  • I'm working through this volume more slowly than the Beginner volume I reviewed previously, which is all to the good because it means learning is happening. ) Like the first book, this is a collection of stories that were written expressly to reinforce specific grammar and vocabulary points, so occasionally they can feel a little forced, but still they're a much more fun way to get that additional exposure than just working through a textbook! (Which I'm also doing...)
  • This was a great book to help me take my French Vocabulary to a new level. Some parts were easy for me but some parts were challenging that required me to take the time to learn new vocabulary. The stories are interesting and allowed me to stay focused to learn the new vocabulary through the context of the stories. This book was a good way for me to continue enhancing my ability to “Speak” French quickly. I hope there will be an audio version soon as this will speed up my learning as well. A great book to learn Vocabulary faster and in a fun way.
  • I have both the beginner AND this intermediate short story books french from lingo mastery. I also have them as audio books on audible. I read a story until I fully understand it, then I listen to it on audible while following along with the text to make sure I am pronouncing it right and to train my ear . These books are very well written and produced, and I think they are a great value and they have helped greatly to improve my fluency AND vocabulary. Highly recommend them. John
