  • It is remarkable that this book completely excludes the contributions of Indians to Atomic Science, beginning with prior work of Kannada that predates the Greeks. It was literally the outflow of mathematical and scientific ideas out of India that triggered the entire enlightenment in Europe. But, sadly, this book, like so many of its peers, concludes that Western science began with the Greeks, without bothering to find out where Greek thought originated -- namely, in the Indian sciences. Many of the early greeks (Pythagorus, Apollonius, etc.) were known to travel thousands of miles to venture to India to learn and bring back the knowledge developed there. In later periods, the ideas of calculus were brought to Europe by the Jesuit missionaries who came to Keralas shores. When will these historical exclusions be corrected? It seems the narrative is hell bent on showing that science and technology began 'in the West'; despite the fact that it was a global phenomenon that had its roots in Indian thought. The enlightenment was largely a period of tremendous intellectual piracy, partly fueled by the fact that the Church played such a heavy hand in the development of Western science. To avoid some very serious consequences, many of the early scientists avoided crediting the original sources, for fear of reprisals from the Church.
  • I've read dozens of books on atomic theory, quantum mechanics, nuclear physics, etc, and this book was the best as far as explaining fundamental principles. The narrative was clear and the photos, illustrations, etc, were great. After laying the groundwork, the book explained fission, fusion, quantum principles, lasers, MRI machines, and a multitude of other things related to the atom. If you read one book on the subject, this is the one.
  • What I really love about this book is the straightforward, factual, no-nonsense approach to the atomic and subatomic worlds. The author does an amazing job of boiling down these vast fields into the essential information, and most importantly, it's relevancy (i.e. what the significance or implications of that factoid is, and where appropriate, it's applications).

    I have a very strong physics background, and I loved this book because it covers the main points of particle/quantum physics in one concise book, allowing me to better see the patterns I already knew were there, and to see some new ones that I didn't.
